This article in the AAFP News Now (American Academy of Family Physicians) discusses problems with drug alerts in EHRs. Our own Dr. Andrews is quoted. One of the techniques we use to improve patient safety is drug alerts which check to be sure patients are not being given medications they are allergic to or that will interact with other meds. Alerts also show up to advise a physician if they need to be careful about using specific medications for younger or older patients or those with certain diagnoses.
